The Best Places to Eat in Maastricht

Maastricht offers tons of amazing places to eat. From cozy breakfast places, to delicious streetfood options, quirky cafés and nice restaurants. No matter what your tastebuds fancy, Maastricht definitely has something to offer for you.

During my three years as a student in Maastricht, I tried a lot of nice food places in Maastricht. So let me introduce to you now my 23 favorite places to eat/drink in Maastricht. All of them are quite affordable, since I was living on a studend budget. And since I’m a vegetarian, all of them offer vegetarian options, most also vegan options. This list is not exhaustive though, since there are simply so many places to eat in Maastricht, that even in three years you cannot try all of them 😉

Breakfast

Preps

Preps is definitely one of the best places to eat breakfast in Maastricht.

One of my favorite breakfast places in Maastricht is Preps (Mariastraat 6A). They offer pancakes, soups, sandwiches or bowls, and tons of vegan options. Definitely try their savory pancakes (see picture), they change regularly but so far all of the ones I tried were amazing.

Livin’ Room

Livin’ Room (Heggenstraat 7) is a great breakfast or lunch place, where you can get sandwiches, bowls, omelets, etc. for an affordable price. The line on weekends can get pretty long though, but be patient, it’s worth it!

Bagels & Beans

This recommendation might seem a bit basic, because Bagels & Beans (Wycker Brugstraat 31) is a big chain in the Netherlands, but their Bagels are simply AMAZING. Especially their Avocado Creamcheese Bagel!

Lunch

Friet Elite

You can find the best fries in Maastricht with some amazing toppings at Friet Elite.

Friet Elite (Achter Het Vleeshuis 7) is one of the best places to eat fries in Maastricht. They have amazing homemade fries with nice toppings and sauces, and what would be a trip to the Netherlands without fries? Tip: Try their Guacamole Fries.

Cato by Cato

Cato by Cato (Stenenbrug 9A) is THE student go-to for an affordable lunch. You can mix and match different staple foods like pasta, couscous or potatoes with different toppings that change daily. Here again they have many vegan options.

Levantini

Levantini (Boschstraat 85) is a nice Mediterranean restaurant, where they sell hummus, pitas and bowls. And the best thing is that all of their options are vegetarian!

Coffee

De Bisschopsmolen

Waffles and Vlaai at the bakery De Bisschopsmolen in Maastricht.

De Bisschopsmolen (Stenenbrug 3) is a bakery and café which uses spelt flour made with their own 7th century water mill. The water mill is nice to look at, and this is also one of the best places in Maastricht to try the Limburgse Vlaai, a speciality from Limburg. It is a type of cake (although people from Limburg refuse to call it that) with different fillings, like rhubarb, cherry, apple or rice, for example.

KOFFIE

At KOFFIE (Maastrichter Heidenstraat 8), you can find amazing coffee and cakes in a modern interiour. It is also a nice place for working or studying.

Fixed Gear Coffee

One thing that Maastricht loves is to combine bike shops with cafés. One of these places is Fixed Gear Coffee (Grote Gracht 42). If you are into biking you should definitely check this place out. But even if not, it’s still worth it to come here for the coffee and for their homemade cookies (they’re really amazing). It’s also a nice place for studying.

Oila BV

Gingerale and a homemade beetroot chai latte at Oila BV in Maastricht.

Oila BV (Sporenstraat 9a) is a place I only discovered very recently, as it’s a bit hidden. They have a small shop in the back, where you can buy vintage products, and unique, homemade items. They also have coffee of course, and different types of chai lattes, juices, plus homemade cakes and cookies. Also, they have a big fluffy dog called Hugo, which is in itself a reason to go there.

Bandito Espresso

Bandito Espresso (Grote Gracht 90-92), is located inside the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Maastricht University. This is the faculty I used to study at, so needless to say that I spent way to much money at this café. It might be a bit difficult to find this place, because you have to go through the faculty, but it’s definitely worth it for the amazing coffee, soups, sandwiches and cookies (especially the peanutbutter chocolate cookie!). And everything is vegetarian.

Other

Möge Tee

At Möge Tee (Wycker Brugstraat 57 & Markt 1), you can find amazing bubble tea in many different flavours. Apart from the classic milk tea, they also have cheese tea, yakult tea and fruit tea, and they also sell fluffy pancakes.

Royal Donuts

The donuts at Royal Donuts Maastricht look super gorgeous and also taste amazing.

I just had to mention Royal Donuts (Grote Gracht 4), despite them being an international chain, so not exactly an inside tip. But their donuts just taste absolutely amazing, plus they also look super gorgeous.

Sicilery

Sicilery (Grote Gracht 13) only opened recently, but it’s already one of the best places to eat some italian/sicilian snacks in Maastricht. They offer Arancini, Granita, Cannoli, drinks and coffee.

Dinner

Dadawan

Dadawan is definitely one of the best food places in Maastricht. I especially love their poke bowl.

One of the best places to eat dinner in Maastricht is Dadawan (Spoorweglaan 1 & Kesselkade 39-40). They are an Asian fusion restaurant where they sell one of the best poke bowls I have ever eaten. They also offer sushi, noodle and rice dishes, stone bowls, burgers, ramen, etc. Prices are very economic, especially considering the high quality of the food. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Maastricht.

Ane Ramen

Ane Ramen is a cute little ramen place at Rechtstraat 29. I absolutely love their vegetarian ramen, because the broth is super flavorful (which is not always the case with vegetarian broth, unfortunately). They also have meat options of course. The restaurant itself is very cozy and the walls are decorated with puzzles.

Bim & Bap

The Asian fusion restaurant Bim & Bap is one of the best places to eat dinner for an affordable price in Maastricht.

Also a very tasty option is Bim & Bap (Tongersestraat 9), a korean and asian fusion restaurant, and one of the top affordable restaurants in Maastricht, in my opinion. They offer for example mixed bowls, soups, and “bento boxes” filled with rice, tofu or meat, springroles, vegetables, etc.

Babs Burritos

For Mexican food there is Babs Burrito (Stationsstraat 19 & Helmstraat 10). They offer some big and juicy Burritos, as well as very nice homemade potato wedges.

With Love Burrito

Then there is also With Love Burrito (Markt 4), which I also had to mention, because both Burrito places are so amazing that I cannot decide which one is better. But why don’t you try both and decide for yourself?

Piano B

At Piano B (Tongersestraat 25) you will find the best pizza in Maastricht. They offer authentic Italian pizza made in the woodstove. Since they do not have a seating area though, it is only possible to take the pizza to go, and the waiting times can be long (yes, they are very popular), so it is better to call in advance to order.

Drinks

Stadsbrouwerij Maastricht

Maastricht has its own Stadsbrouwerij where you can try different beers that were brewed right here.

Maastricht has its very own beer brewery, the Stadsbrowerij de Maastrichter Malteser (Oeverwal 12). You can sit on their terrace by the river where you can try their beer while optionally also having a bite. They also offer tours through their brewery with a beer tasting included.

Take Five

Take Five (Bredestraat 14) is a nice student bar with good cocktails and fair prices. You can also get dinner here.

Café Zondag

Café Zondag is a nice cozy café/bar in Wyck where you can get regularly changing speciality beer, wine and other drinks.

And last but definitely not least: The amazing Café Zondag (Wycker Brugstraat 42). You can pretty much get anything here, from a nice brunch, to a good piece of cake in the afternoon, to a cold beer at night. There is always something going on here, and it’s usually full of young people.
